PhD RA Position for Volcano Monitoring Sensor Networks http://sensorweb.vancouver.wsu.edu/research/oasis.html A PhD RA position is being offered in the area of wireless sensor networks, starting 2008. In collaboration with NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory(JPL), USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory(CVO) and Harvard University, we are developing platforms that involve real-time data collection of seismic, acoustic, and GPS data from a network of wireless sensors deployed on an active volcano. This project requires a tight integration of computer science and domain science expertise, including novel techniques for data collection, medium access control, multi-hop networking, real-time data compression, and machine learning. We are planning to deploy a prototype network at Mount St. Helens, Washington, in the coming year. This RA position provides an opportunity to engage with an emerging research area involving wireless sensor networks and volcanology, to work with top researchers at WSU, Harvard, CVO and JPL, gain real-world sensor network deployment experience, and build a strong publication record. We are seeking highly qualified applicants with a background in wireless sensor networks, wireless networking, embedded systems, data compression, artificial intelligence and distributed systems. The PhD candidate will graduate with a PhD in CS from the WSU-Pullman Campus and is expected to work at the WSU-Vancouver Campus (near Mt. Saint Helen). The WSU-Vancouver Campus is in Portland metro area and is surrounded by high-tech companies including Intel, HP, Sharp, Wafertech etc. Travel costs between Pullman and Vancouver, if any, will be covered by the project. This position is open to all graduate students in EE or CS or computer engineering. Graduating BS and MS students who are interested in continuing their PhD studies are strongly encouraged to apply. To apply: Please send your CV and a statement outlining your interest/expertise relevant to this project to BOTH Prof. Shirazi and Prof. Song at the addresses below (email applications only) ASAP.
